My son is the Star of the Week in his classroom. This entailed making a poster about himself and filling in answers to questions. For example, his answer to "A Person You Admire" was originally God, but then he decided that since God was not a person, he changed it to Mrs. H; his classroom teacher.
While some may think this is a brownie point move, it is really legitimate. She not only is a hard worker beyond compare, but she snapped her achilles tendon while playing tennis the first week of summer; which meant surgery and hours and days and weeks of rehab. She has since successfully moved from a leg scooter at the beginning of the school year to her cute dress shoes. But she never managed to let her quick discomfort and disability hinder her quality teaching.
I remember the first day of second grade (a few short months ago), my son came bounding to the car with a huge grin. He knew Mrs. H. from his sister's days of second grade, so he was aware of her style and personality. He said to me, "Mom, Mrs. H. had to wear jeans and tennis shoes today! Can you believe it? She even apologized! She's so cool."
You might think that my son was making a comment regarding fashion, like a commentary that my girl would have stated, like, "Mom, Mrs. H. was not all dressed up today like she always is. She actually had to wear just her jeans today!" No, my second grade boy's point was that it was so cool that she was in jeans and tennis shoes and that she had to have a scooter for her foot and WOW! she is so athletic and rugged! He saw his teacher in a whole new light.
Regardless of her sports injury, it is clear that Mrs. H. has a gift for connecting to all of her students; thus the deserved listing to be a person my son admires.
Each day of this week, my son can bring in anything to share to the classroom. Today he brought his favorite holiday book: Dream Snow by Eric Carle. He will be reading it to his classroom today and he is soooo excited. The push button ending is fantastic.
Star of the Week ~ an important event in a child's eyes.
